DPS Choice Enrollment Process

SchoolChoice Round 1 for 2020-21 takes place January 15th-February 18th, 2020.

DPS SchoolChoice: An overview

DPS believes all students should have the same access to quality schools, regardless of their background or where they live in Denver. That’s what SchoolChoice is all about.

Any DPS student who wants to attend a school other than their automatically assigned neighborhood school can take part in SchoolChoice. (To determine your neighborhood school, go to schoolfinder.dpsk12.org).

Families submit one SchoolChoice form per student, on which they rank their students’ top five school preferences. DPS then matches students to schools based on those preferences, as well as school admission priorities and available space. The next SchoolChoice season takes place January 15th-February 18th, 2019 for the 2020-21 school year.

Here’s how it works:

  • Research: Learn more about schools in which you might be interested. Use the Great Schools Enrollment Guides, SchoolMatch and tour individual schools.
  • Prioritize: Be ready to fill out the SchoolChoice form by ranking your top five most-preferred schools in order.
  • Complete: Fill out the entire SchoolChoice form, including ranking your top five schools, when it becomes available on Jan. 15th, 2020.
  • Submit: Submit your form by 4 p.m. on Feb. 15. The DPS SchoolChoice system is designed to maximize the number of students who are placed in their most-preferred school. Letters and emails notifying families of their school placement will be sent in early April.

Choose Online!

When you fill out the SchoolChoice form online, good things happen! It’s quicker and easier – no paper shuffle, and no delivering the form to a school or drop-off center. Plus, you’ll receive your student’s school assignment sooner. Make sure you have a Parent Portal account at myportal.dpsk12.org, and fill out the SchoolChoice form online beginning Jan. 15, 2020. The deadline to submit is Feb. 18, 2020.

Round 2 of SchoolChoice for 2020-21

Round 2 of the DPS SchoolChoice process begins every year after families are notified of their Round 1 school placement.

Round 2 is the first-come, first-served segment of Choice for families who missed Round 1; took part in Round 1 but want to re-explore their options, or are new to DPS for next school year.

There is no online process; Round 2 forms will be available at all schools and below. Submit your completed Round 2 form directly to your preferred school or schools that have availability for 2020-21. Read below for more information:

Who should submit a Round 2 SchoolChoice form?

  • Families who missed Round 1 and would like to change their student’s school.
  • Families who have changed their mind since submitting a Round 1 form. If you are happy with your school placement following Round 1, you do not need to take part in Round 2.
  • Please note: If your student was wait-listed at a school in Round 1, please DO NOT submit a Round 2 form to the same school, as your student already has a spot on the school’s list.

What do I need to do to participate in Round 2?

  • Current DPS students must submit a paper Round 2 form directly to each requested school.

Where do I submit my form?

  • Round 2 forms should be submitted in person to the requested school.
  • A separate SchoolChoice form must be submitted to each school requested. There is no limit to the number of schools to which a Round 2 form is submitted.
  • There is no online form for Round 2. Forms received by mail, fax or email will not be processed.

When can I submit my form?

  • Round 2 begins mid-April, 2020. Round 2 forms may be submitted to schools through Aug. 31, 2020

How does Round 2 of the SchoolChoice process work, and how will I be notified of my student’s status?

  • Round 2 SchoolChoice forms are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no lottery involved and no priorities are given. If the school has available space for the 2020-21 school year at the time you submit your form, your student will be approved and enrolled for next year. If a waitlist exists, your student will be added to the list in date and time order.
  • Round 2 notification is immediate. The school to which you submit your form can inform you if there is space available or if your student will be placed on a waitlist. Letters are not sent from our office.
  • If you are accepted to a school in Round 2, your Round 1 school assignment is relinquished. Wait-list positions are not affected.

NOTE: Monarch accepts students from other school districts. You must follow the same process for admission into Monarch.
