Dear Families:

There is a lot happening right now at Monarch, so let’s jump right in!

The Charter School Performance Framework

As you know, each public school in Colorado is assigned an overall school performance rating every year based on student performance and growth on state assessments.  Following the assignment of performance ratings, each school is required to develop a Unified Improvement Plan (UIP) that outlines targets for performance outcomes and strategies that the school will implement to continue to improve academic outcomes for children.

Based on our school’s performance and growth on the 2018 assessments given for the last two years (2016-2017 and 2017-2018), Monarch Montessori Charter school was given a rating of Yellow (Improvement Plan: Meets 95% participation) by the Colorado Department of Education, and orange (Accredited Under Priority Watch) under Denver Public Schools.

You can find our complete 2018 School Performance Framework with Denver Public Schools here. Our 2018 School Performance Framework with the Colorado Department of Education is not yet available beyond the one overall rating (which is not yet final), but we will share the detailed Framework when it is available in December.

We want to hear your feedback as we work to continue to improve the experience of every child and family at Monarch.  On December 19 at 4:30 pm, we will be holding a Parent meeting to discuss our next steps together, to answer your questions, and to get your feedback on what we are doing well and what we can improve. We invite parents to come, ask questions, and share your feedback and thoughts.

The Great News: Dual Language Path comes to Kinder!

Dual Language Path is going to Kindergarten! As you may know, we launched our Dual Language Path in First Steps this year, starting in Ms. Brisa’s Primary classroom for 3 and 4-year-olds. The goal is to grow this program up through Charter so that in the future, children graduating from 5th grade in this path will be bilingual and bi-literate in English and Spanish! We are excited to announce that DPS has authorized us to pilot this program in Kindergarten next year, and our Monarch board approved it! If you have a child or know children going into Primary (ages 3-4, in First Steps) or Kindergarten (age 5, in our free, public Charter school) in fall 2019, and are interested in learning more, reach out to Laura at! In the Denver Public Schools Choice system, kindergarten families will have a choice of either our general Monarch Montessori school or the Spanish program (or they can choose both, prioritizing the one they want most), which is exciting! Space is limited, so families who are interested in the kinder should watch DPS choice deadlines closely.  Round 1 is from January 15-February 15, 2019.  Thanks to the Bilingual Committee for helping us launch this joint First Steps and Charter effort! It is so great to see our community come together as one Monarch family of over this – First Steps and Charter, English Speakers and Spanish speakers!

The Disappointing News: 6th grade on hold for now

As some of you know, Monarch Montessori of Denver Charter also applied to DPS to grow up to the 6th grade next year, following a more traditional Montessori three-year cycle in Upper El. Denver Public Schools declined our application, citing concerns about families’ continuation to middle school. They worry that it would not be in a child’s best interest to stay another year at Monarch when Middle Schools in the area all start in the 6th grade. The school we thought children could go to – Denver Junior Senior Montessori- is not close by, and DPS was concerned that families might be unpleasantly surprised by the distance. While we are disappointed, we appreciate everyone’s thoughts and support as we explored the opportunity.

First Steps Families (infants-preschool): Take the Survey!

First Steps needs your help! We are being rated by Colorado Shines in December. We are currently a 4 star program and we would love to keep it that way! Please complete the short survey below. If we have 80% of our families complete the survey it helps tremendously with our rating. Thank you so much for your help! If you have any questions about our rating process please don’t hesitate to ask Ms. Catherine or Ms. Laura. To begin your survey, please click hereUse this license number to log in: 1592573
