3 & 4 year-olds and Kindergarten – Children’s House

Our elementary program begins with Kindergarten in our Children’s House program. Children’s House is a blending of our private/nonprofit (tuition based) First Steps program and our public Kindergarten. The “Children’s House” (also called “Primary”) is the Montessori classroom for three to six year-olds (PK3-K in conventional  education). The approach for this age recognizes young children as sensorial, hands-on learners with innate drives to imitate,  repeat, concentrate, engage, and absorb academic and cultural knowledge from direct experience. Kindergartners will be with the younger students for the three hour morning work cycle and recess to continue community building and allow the kindergartners to be the leaders in the classroom. This three year cycle allows students who are in First Steps to continue for one more year with their class if accepted through the DPS choice system. For new students they will be added to an established class. Lunch, literacy block and specials will be in the afternoon. There will be 3 teachers in these classrooms with a 10:1 ratio. The children’s house classroom can teach curriculum up to 2nd grade for a more advanced student.  *Note our 3 & 4 year-olds must apply for enrollment through our First Steps program and it is NOT part of the DPS system.

1st Through 5th Grade—Montessori Elementary

Montessori classrooms for 1st through 5th grade typically group children in 1st–3rd grade (Lower Elementary) and 4th–5th grade (Upper Elementary) classrooms. The approach for this age group recognizes grade school children as driven by  reason, imagination, and curiosity, and supports their needs for movement, group work, and the development of  independence.
